My day to day job is to run the innovative projects in the company directly. We take the company's top problems/areas of focus, develop solutions for them, and implement them. I have been doing this for over 5 years. I am not sure what other "innovation" groups are doing out there, but the ones I have worked with at other companies have similar roles.
