Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Scott!. I too am a new manager in a new position in a dept that is going through growing pains and dysfunction. I really had no where to start until I read your incisive article that at least has given me a road map on how NOT to manage and what to expect in the first few months on the job. In my case, I did not seek a managerial position yet it found me. Now I have to draw on my past experience from both good and bad managers as well as look inside myself and look at my skills with a clear eye.

Your article has given me hope that I can make it as a manager and I hope it can help many others who are in a similar situation as myself.

Saludos and thanks again

Scott, this is a great article. I work with new managers and so much of what you have said resonates loudly with me. You have done something that is very important in grounding new managers -getting them to face the fact that being a manager is very difficult. It is not an ego trip. Getting them to reflect back on the managers they have had in their careers and look at what they did well and what they did poorly, as you suggest, is a very good exercise that I'm going to use in my work in the future. Of course, many new managers are so Gung Ho. They won't be like the managers they have had in the past! They will be different, but when they get there they so often find that in spite of their highest motivations it is very difficult managing the diversity of people in our organisations today. To protect that ego, that heralded their superior skills in the interview, they resort to the very managerial behaviour that sees everyone disengage and turn against them. To get people to work WITH you as a manager and not just FOR you is very challenging and requires highly developed soft skills rather than actual technical management skills. Many new managers haven't got those.
